Did you know 2.1 million people aged 16 and over in England and Wales alone are subjected to some form of domestic abuse every year? And in the UK, 60% of households also have a pet, which works out as 36 million domestic animals within 17.2 million households.
This means that there is significant crossover between humans and companion animals being subjected to domestic abuse.
Animal abuse is a proven high-risk indicator of serious harm and domestic homicide. Despite this, few professionals apply this critical information within a whole family and multi-agency approach to addressing domestic abuse.
Safeguarding Animal & Human Survivors of Sexual and Domestic Abuse (SAHSDA) invites you and your colleagues to become PAWS Champions© and help change the tail© for human and animal survivors of domestic abuse.
Our training equips participants with the knowledge and skills to:
1. Understand how perpetrators use animals as a tactic of coercive control and the intersection between animal abuse and other forms of abuse, including child abuse, elder abuse and abuse of those with disabilities.
2. Confidently include animals in intake procedures, risk assessments, and effective safety planning, using a truly multi-agency approach to improve outcomes, and prevent harm, for all victim survivors, regardless of species.
We are hosting an Open Session of PAWS Champions©: Recognising & Responding to Companion Animal Abuse as a Tactic of Coercive Control on November 28th, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM (UK Time), and we would be delighted if you could join us.
